Organizing and creating art

Something that I noticed many artists struggling with is coming up with ideas and finding motivation. As an artist that regularly posts on the internet, sometimes I get questions on how I can produce work every week, especially since I am still a student and have other things to manage outside of drawing and posting.

I often see posts on social media saying things like “Draw every day”, “Bring a sketchbook with you”, and “Find a new subject to draw” as advice to get over art blocks. Although this advice may be useful to some people it never really worked for me. If anything, it only made me less motivated to draw.

I used to try to literally draw every single week no matter how busy it got but I eventually realized that it really tired me out. Trying to draw every week without fail was good for my progress however it only made me dread drawing more as every week I would think “Oh no I still need to make a drawing for this week but I have no ideas.”

Eventually, I figured out my system for posting art every week, and that was to create works ahead of time. I try my best to draw as much as possible when I have the motivation to draw anything at all. Currently four drawings in my “to post” pile, and I have another in progress. Now this isn’t to say that this is also what you should be doing if you want to be consistent in posting and drawing, it is just the system that works the best for me. The benefit to this is that in case there is suddenly a week in which I physically am unable to draw, be it because of sickness or stress, I still will have something to post.

The blurred out images consists of commissions and “to post” artworks. No spoilers today!!

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been swamped with work and have been unable to find time for myself to create art, or at least create art for myself, I have been doing a lot of work for school. Thankfully, because of my silly little “to post” pile, I have been able to still show new drawings and progress every week. In the end, this system works for me and if you ever want to be consistent in your art practice just know that you should take breaks when you can and don’t push yourself to create when you really don’t want to.

Sorry, this post isn’t as polished as my previous ones. It is currently a very busy time for me and I am unable to write much.
